Pee Wees can play in new stadium
Bengals back off plan to move them Cincinnati Enquirer November 16, 1999 by Dan Klepal
The Cincinnati Bengals said Monday that the team will not stand in the way of youth football playoff games being held in the new stadium complex. Those playoff games have been a tradition at Cinergy Field for years. Troy Blackburn, the Bengals' director of stadium development, said the team is interested in expanding the number of youth football games played in the team's home. "We will accommodate these events by hosting youth football games on a weekend when we are away," Mr. Blackburn said in a prepared statement. "No one supports youth football more than the Bengals." Last week, Mr. Blackburn said that the youth games might have to be played on the team's artificial-turf practice field so that the stadium's surface isn't damaged. That led to a firestorm of criticism from county political leaders, who said the stadium is a community asset. Mr. Blackburn said the news media "misreported" his comments. "The only situation that could impact these events would be an unusual weather situation," Mr. Blackburn said. "We do not foresee that happening." The controversy over youth football led Monday to commissioners delaying a discussion about the purchase of scoreboards for the facility. Commissioner John Dowlin said the $7.8 million contract likely will be awarded at Wednesday's commission meeting. "The idea that a couple of Pee Wee football games could be a problem is unthinkable," Commissioner Bob Bedinghaus said. The county is searching for a firm that will market the new stadium. Its club level can be used for business meetings, weddings and other events; the field will be used for college games and concerts.
