Hyland to county: Start over on stadium lease
Cincinnati Post December 7, 1999 by Rachel Melcer Hamilton County commissioner candidate Marilyn Hyland has called on the county and Bengals President Mike Brown to renegotiate the lease agreement for the Paul Brown Stadium. "I have heard from many people who say they never would have supported the tax hike if they had known everything that was involved," Ms. Hyland said. What would the Democrat like changed? "The most obvious provision is the one (practically) guaranteeing sellouts in the new stadium," she said in a press release. "If the Bengals can't attract enough fans, why is it the county's responsibility? How about if the Bengals agree to pay the county a penalty if they don't make it to the Super Bowl?" Ms. Hyland said she was not suggesting construction on the $407 million project be halted. But she would like the county to take back the team's right to manage the stadium, to sell naming rights and collect all revenue from advertising, food and beverage sales there, and the county's promise to pay for high-tech stadium gadgets. Republican Commissioner Bob Bedinghaus, whom Ms. Hyland is trying to unseat, was unavailable for comment.
